Sanjay-Dubri Tiger Reserve, located in Sidhi and Singrauli districts of Madhya Pradesh, has a history rooted in India’s wildlife conservation efforts. Originally, the forest area was declared as Sanjay National Park in 1981, primarily to protect its rich biodiversity and dense tropical dry deciduous forests. In the same region, the Dubri Wildlife Sanctuary was established to conserve local wildlife, particularly tigers and herbivores.
In 1993, under Project Tiger, the two areas—Sanjay National Park and Dubri Wildlife Sanctuary—were merged and officially designated as Sanjay-Dubri Tiger Reserve. This merger aimed to provide a larger, contiguous habitat for tigers and other predators while ensuring better management, anti-poaching measures, and ecological monitoring.
Over the years, Sanjay-Dubri has become an important tiger habitat in Central India, supporting not only tigers but also leopards, dholes (wild dogs), sloth bears, and a wide variety of herbivores and bird species. The reserve also plays a key role in connecting other tiger landscapes in Madhya Pradesh, contributing to broader tiger conservation and ecological balance in the region.
Sanjay-Dubri Tiger Reserve, situated in the Sidhi and Singrauli districts of Madhya Pradesh, is one of Central India’s important tiger habitats. The reserve covers approximately 466 km² and encompasses the areas of the former Sanjay National Park and Dubri Wildlife Sanctuary, which were merged in 1993 under Project Tiger to create a contiguous tiger landscape.
The reserve is named after the Sanjay and Dubri rivers, which flow through its dense tropical dry deciduous forests, providing vital water sources for wildlife. Its vegetation is dominated by Sal, Teak, Mahua, Saja, Haldu, Dhaora, and Bamboo, creating an ideal habitat for a variety of herbivores and predators.
Sanjay-Dubri supports a thriving population of Royal Bengal Tigers, along with leopards, dholes (wild dogs), sloth bears, and several herbivore species like chital, sambar, and gaur. The reserve also hosts a rich diversity of birds, reptiles, and amphibians, making it a biologically significant region.
Over the years, Sanjay-Dubri has become a crucial part of India’s tiger conservation network, providing protected wilderness for tigers and other wildlife while maintaining ecological balance. The reserve is known for its relatively undisturbed landscapes, making it ideal for wildlife observation, research, and eco-tourism.
