FLORA OF SANJAY DUBRI TIGER RESERVE

The flora of Sanjay Dubri Tiger Reserve is mainly comprised of North Indian moist deciduous peninsular Sal forests along with dry mixed deciduous Sal forest types, with dense Sal-dominated patches spread across much of the reserve.

Mixed deciduous forests occur especially on hills and slopes where Sal density decreases, and bamboo is found scattered throughout the forest, forming under-storey or clumps. The landscape also includes small grasslands and meadow patches that support herbivores, while riparian vegetation thrives near rivers and streams, creating diverse habitats.

Important tree species include Shorea robusta (Sal), Terminalia tomentosa (Saj), Anogeissus latifolia (Dhaora), Diospyros melanoxylon (Tendu), Butea monosperma (Palas), Bombax ceiba (Semal), Pterocarpus marsupium (Bija), Dalbergia sissoo (Sissoo), Phyllanthus emblica (Amla), Buchanania lanzan (Chironji), and Ziziphus mauritiana (Ber).

The reserve hosts around 300 plant species including flowering, non-flowering, medicinal shrubs, herbs, and climbers, contributing to a rich and varied ecosystem. With plains, hills, and river valleys creating micro-habitats, the vegetation supports a healthy food chain.

Dense canopy preserves moisture for wildlife, bamboo and shrubs give cover to herbivores and smaller mammals, and riparian zones protect water sources while benefiting birds, amphibians, and aquatic species — making flora the ecological foundation of the entire reserve.

FAUNA OF SANJAY DUBRI TIGER RESERVE

Sanjay Dubri Tiger Reserve is home to a remarkably diverse wildlife community, where every species contributes to the balance of the forest ecosystem. The majestic Bengal Tiger stands at the top of the food chain, supported by other key carnivores like the Indian Leopard, Dhole, Wolf, Jackal, and the shy Sloth Bear.

Its grasslands and woodland habitats sustain a strong herbivore base including Chital, Sambar, Nilgai, Four-horned Antelope, Wild Boar, and Barking Deer — ensuring a healthy prey population for predators.

Smaller mammals such as Jungle Cats, Civets, Porcupines, Foxes, and various rodents are common, while primates like the Rhesus Macaque and Hanuman Langur add life to the canopy.

The reserve’s rivers and water bodies provide habitat to Marsh Crocodiles, turtles, amphibians, and freshwater fish species. A rich variety of birds — from raptors and hornbills to colorful woodland birds — further enriches the biodiversity.

Together, these species make Sanjay Dubri Tiger Reserve a vital haven for wildlife conservation in Central India.
